Every day, 365 days a year, First United Methodist Church of Denham Springs is ministering in many ways to members of our church family, our community, and our world. We are blessed to be part of a community of faith that provides such a rich resource of outreach ministries, and we are grateful for the role that each member plays on our ministry team, and for the prayers and gifts that sustain our efforts. Here’s a brief summary of some of our outreach ministry and mission programs:
CommUnity Hands Food Pantry
In Acts 6 we learn that one of the earliest missions of the disciples was to distribute food to those in need. We have embraced that mission through our participation in the Livingston Parish Food Pantry, which is operated out of a dedicated space within our church facility.
The Food Pantry is a collaborative effort supported financially by our church in partnership with Northside Baptist Church and St. Francis Episcopal Church in Denham Springs. First Baptist Church of Denham Springs also provides support through food drives held throughout the year.
The Pantry is open Monday through Friday from 10-11 a.m., except on major federal and religious holidays. It is currently the only pantry in this area that is open five days a week and is manned by volunteers from First UMC DS and other area churches.
Proof of residency in Livingston Parish is required. Call (225) 665-0855 for more information.
Nursing Home Ministry
The Nursing Home Ministry is a wonderful and rewarding way to serve. As the blessings are given, so are the blessings received! Through this program, bags of personal items and toiletries are to residents at our local Harvest Manor and Golden Age Nursing Homes in Denham Springs. Many items of clothing are also distributed. This ministry is in need of volunteer help and support for special projects and seasonal gift distribution. For more information, please contact the church office at (225) 665-8995.
Prayer Shawl Ministry
We believe prayer is powerful, and we gather with a group of individuals threading prayer and love by crafting shawls, blankets, lap blankets, and everything you can imagine to offer comfort to those who are in special need of grace. The Prayer Shawl Ministry meets on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month at 9 a.m. in room 108.
Our Methodist roots teach us that faith is lived out through our hands. We partner with surrounding churches to provide assistance to all who are in need through the CommUnity Hands ministry program. This ministry is open on Thursdays from 9 a.m. to noon, located at 2171 Tower Drive (inside St. Vincent de Paul Society). Call (225) 667-9015 for more information on the services provided and to learn how you can lend a hand to help others through this program.
Cooks for Christ
This ministry provides food when needed for shut-ins, those that are ill, families with a new baby, individuals recovering from recent surgery, etc. The Cooks for Christ freezer is located in the church office workroom and distribution is not limited to church members. If you know of someone in need who may be blessed by this ministry, you may pick up and deliver food that has been prepared and packaged by our Cooks for Christ volunteers.
For those of you who are cooking, please package prepared foods, freeze, and label them with the date prepared and a description of food to place in the freezer. Any and all help is greatly appreciated. If you have any questions, please contact the church office at (225) 665-8995.
